Diamond Cut

A beauty of a well-cut diamond lies not only in its shape but also in the effectiveness of the stone to reflect the light that touches it. A poorly-cut diamond appears lifeless whereas a well-cut one has a brilliant, fiery, and scintillating appearance. Diamond cuts determine the quality of a diamond to a great extent. An perfectly cut diamond has ideal proportions, angles, excellent polish and symmetry, and appears larger than other diamonds of the same carat weight. Its ideal proportions make sure that it refracts light to produce the required fire and brilliance. The perfect symmetry can be acquired only with immense expertise in diamond cutting, which is what Divine Solitaires ensures! All the diamonds from Divine Solitaires are Ex.Ex.Ex. Plus cut diamonds which refers to excellent cut, excellent polish and excellent symmetry.

Diamond Color

Diamonds can be colourless or may have a slight yellow tint. However, the diamonds with the least amount of colour are preferred while shopping for diamonds. A diamond colour is graded on a scale of D to Z, however Divine Solitaires provides diamonds that are graded on a diamond color grade D to K and are divided into five broad categories- colourless, nearly colourless, faint, very light, and light. Diamonds that lie between D-F on the colour scale display no colour and are the clearest diamonds. D to F are the rarest and the most valuable diamonds than the others on the scale. Diamonds lying between the range G to H appear nearly colourless when observed from the face-up position but display a little amount of colour when observed from the face-down position against a perfectly white background. Diamonds under K display a faint yellow color when viewed from the face-up position. They are a great option for those who do not mind the color.

Diamond Clarity

Since diamonds are formed inside the earth under extreme pressure and heat, they have small imperfections (called ‘birthmarks’), which doesn’t come as a surprise. Every diamond comes with inclusions (imperfections on the inside) and blemishes (imperfections on the surface). The degree to which these imperfections are present on or inside the diamond refers to diamond clarity and ranges from FL (Flawless) to I (Included). Diamonds that are devoid of such flaws are considered to be of high quality. Divine Solitaires diamonds are superior-quality stones on the range of IF (Internally Flawless) to SI2 (Slightly Included 2).

Diamond Carat

Carat is a term that refers to the weight of a diamond. The word carat originates from the word ‘carob seeds’, a term that was used to measure the weight of the diamonds prior to the twentieth century. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams which is just about the weight of a single paper clip. A carat is completely unrelated to the word ‘Karat’ which sounds quite similar to it and refers to the purity of gold.

For example, a one-carat diamond measures approximately 6.5 mm in width, a diamond that weighs twice as it measures only 8.2 mm wide. Since a diamond that is big in size is rare, it is expected to be expensive. A single two-carat diamond is more expensive than two one-carat diamonds together. This implies that the cost of a diamond increases with its size. So as the carat weight increases, you typically pay more not only in total but also on a pay-per-carat basis. When you buy diamonds you should choose the carat weight not just on the basis of the size but also the cut grade, as it majorly affects the diamond quality.

The cost and quality of diamonds depend on these 4Cs. One should consider all these factors before judging the right value of any diamond.

Diamond Shapes

A beauty of a well-cut diamond lies not only in its shape but also in the effectiveness of the stone to reflect the light that touches it. A poorly-cut diamond appears lifeless whereas a well-cut one has a brilliant, fiery, and scintillating appearance. Diamond cuts determine the quality of a diamond to a great extent. An perfectly cut diamond has ideal proportions, angles, excellent polish and symmetry, and appears larger than other diamonds of the same carat weight. Plus cut diamonds which refers to excellent cut, excellent polish and excellent symmetry.

Brilliant Cut

A brilliant cut diamond is a round cut diamond and is by far the most popular diamond shape. It is superior to other shapes in terms of proper reflection of light, maximising the brightness potential, etc. due to its cone shape.

Oval Cut

The oval cut is a modified version of the round-cut diamond and is made for those who want the brilliance of the round-shaped diamond in an unusual shape. Oval cut diamonds create an illusion of length and elongation.

Princess cut

The princess cut is the fanciest and the most popular diamond shape amongst all others. Like round shape diamonds, princess cut diamonds are compatible with any style of rings. The princess cut diamonds are exquisitely shaped in order to get top brilliance.

Pear Diamonds

A pear-shaped diamond is a combination of the round and marquise cut diamond with a tapered point at one end. A pear-shaped diamond should be perfect in terms of symmetry. The point of the tapered end should match with the apex of the rounded end. The diamond contains 58 facets, allowing light to pass through it in the same way as the round shaped diamond.

Emerald Cut

This is a popular style known for its precision and beauty. The emerald cut is named so because it is cut in a shape that was originally a style for emeralds. It might not possess the brilliance of the diamonds cut in a kite or triangular shape but its pure ice-like clarity makes up for the brilliance. This style of cut is also called the step-cut.

The Asscher Cut

The asscher cut is also called the “Square Emerald-Cut”. It has cropped corners because of which it appears to be octagonal at first glance. Asscher cut diamonds are bright, shiny and clear in appearance but allow the inclusions to be visible to the naked eye, if there are any.

Cushion Cut

The cushion cut is a combination of two shapes, square and the round cut. It is called a cushion cut because of its rounded corners and its resemblance to a pillow. It gives the diamond an antique look and a romantic appeal. The cushion cut diamond contains 58 facets.

Heart diamonds

It is a modified version of a brilliant cut diamond only with a cleft at the top. A heart-shaped diamond is unique and a symbol of love, popular in forms of solitaire pendants and diamond rings. Symmetry is an essential factor while selecting a heart-shaped diamond. The division between the two lobes should be evident. If you want a bigger stone, avoid going for heart-shaped diamonds that weigh less than 0.50 carat as they appear small and even smaller when set in prongs.

Marquise Shape

It is a modified brilliant cut diamond, long and narrow in shape considered ideal for engagement rings. Its long and narrow boat-like shape creates an illusion of it being greater in size. Marquise-shaped diamonds have one of the largest surface areas, which is a great option when one wants to magnify the appearance of a diamond.

Radiant Cut

A radiant-cut diamond is square shaped but still has a complete brilliant cut facet pattern on its crown and pavilion. It combines the round cut and the emerald cut to create an uconventional and brilliant diamond shape.

Diamond Anatomy

All the diamonds are unique in their own way but share the same basic structure. The structural features of a diamond determine its brilliance, proportions, and scintillation. Each part of its basic structure has a particular name. Understanding how these parts contribute to the diamond as a whole help one to choose the perfect stone.

The basic structure of a diamond consists of eight main parts namely table, diameter, crown, girdle, pavilion, depth, crown, and culet. Here’s a brief description of each part.

It is important to understand the anatomy of solitaire diamonds before choosing the right one to appreciate the intricacies of the diamond.

Diamond Certification

Diamond mining has existed for centuries. Diamonds are people’s go-to piece of jewelry. But earlier, their value was completely subjective without a standardized grading method or certification.

Joseph Jacob Jewelers understand the elaborate process of grading. We obtain our certificates from the renowned and recognized diamond labs, namely, Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), and the International Gemological Institute (IGI). Certification ensures the guarantee of the quality and authenticity of a diamond. Grading ensures that you choose the right diamond since people often assume something else. A larger carat or a shinier diamond does not guarantee better quality. Grading is of utmost importance before buying diamonds.

Diamonds can last a lifetime with proper care.

Maintaining diamond jewelry in the same condition can be a task. But with proper instructions cleaning the diamonds can be simple and easy. Solitaire rings are classic and have been around for decades. Their bands are usually narrow to make the diamond look large. We also have variations with having thicker bands or ring guards which frame the solitaire prominently to make it look more distinguished. Regardless of the shape and size of the diamond, solitaire support and complement the ring.

Halo Engagement Rings

Halo engagement rings are the perfect choice for a soon-to-be bride. The radiance of the ring is immaculate as smaller diamonds around it enhance the ring’s sparkle. The most popular choice choices are Asscher-cut diamonds, pear-shaped and oval diamonds. Halo rings setting works well with a single ce2nter stone to a more elaborate three-stone style. The most significant part is the halo setting should complement the center placed stone well. Halo engagement rings accentuate the beauty of a gemstone with brilliance and in an affordable way. The ring style is appealing for people looking for a twist on traditional engagement rings.

Pave Engagement Rings

Pave engagement rings represent a setting style that assembles small diamonds or gemstones on the band of the ring. Very little of the metal band shows through as diamonds are set close-knit. The pave setting is a cherry on the top as it adds extra sparkle to an engagement ring. Pave settings are available in several styles, from modern design settings to a range of traditional designs. Pave settings are versatile and go around the entire band (full pave) or stop halfway (half pave). They don’t necessarily need higher carat weight as enough dazzle and light are flowing through those stones.

Sidestone Engagement Rings

Sidestone engagement rings feature a cluster of diamonds or stones to make your engagement ring setting unique and special. The ring contains stones along with the metal band that complements the diamond in the center. Sidestones add to the ring’s overall brilliance as small size diamonds exhibit sheer radiance. When selecting a center diamond for a side stone engagement ring, round brilliant or princess cut diamonds are preferred choices though other diamonds also blend well with side stones.

Vintage Engagement Rings

If you’re looking for a ring, a little different, vintage engagement rings are the answer. The designs are sturdy with intricate craftsmanship. Vintage rings draw inspiration from different eras in history that makes them timeless and beautiful. They are the epitome of elegance and distinction. The center stones in vintage rings are usually prong-set, basket-set or bezel-set. We offer a wide collection of vintage and antique rings to choose from.

Setting Types

The metal base holding a stone in place defines a setting type. Stone setting is an important characteristic of jewelry as it defines how a particular piece of jewelry will look and how well a stone will reflect light. The stone setting for engagement rings differs according to the personal taste and style preferences of your partner. Have a look at some popular setting types for engagement rings:

Prong

A prong setting is the most popular type of setting used for rings. That’s because the prong setting uses very little metal to hold the gemstone in place. This setting usually features prongs bent over the girdle to snugly fit the stone in place while forming a basket shape underneath. This style allows maximum exposure of a diamond. Diamond exposure, in turn, makes more to pass to add to its brilliance.

Bezel

When a metal rim surrounds a diamond or gemstone by the girdle to secure it in place. Bezel setting often creates an illusion of a larger stone. It is stronger than a prong setting though it allows less light to pass through the diamond in comparison. Popularly, it is used with round shaped diamonds but also works well with other diamond shapes.

Tension

A tension setting refers to the modern method of ring setting. Here the diamond is squeezed into a small grove by pressure. It is a secure setting type and features a unique design for a diamond engagement ring. There is minimal metal interference in the tension setting which results in the stone exhibiting excellent fire, brilliance, and scintillation.

Channel

A Channel setting refers to a type of stone setting secured in place between vertical metal walls. The setting creates a smooth channel by mounting several small gems in a row. The stones are aligned side by side with no metal in between except for a parallel bar. The channel edges overlap the stones, which gives this a unique look.

Twist

The twist setting is picking up pace now. It is a popular choice for couples looking for a different or fresh engagement ring. The metal band is shaped in a specific way to create a crisscrossed effect.

Bar

The bar setting involves vertical bars of metals to set accent or hard gemstones. The contemporary style allows precious metal bars to hold stones in place. The engagement rings showcase the center diamond beautifully to deliver a bold statement. The centerpiece lets maximum light to enter the diamond, increasing its brilliance but provides slightly less security.
